Photo Editing & Graphics Design

Desktop & Workstations

The digital camera whether a professional one or the one on your mobile phone, editing software has opened up whole new possibilities only limited by the imagination.

Whether your are touching up portraits, landscapes or creating whole new concepts.  Having a powerful computer is an essential tool for processing modern, high resolution images quickly and with the minimum delay.

Our custom built solutions ensure that you not only have the best, but the right components, for your needs with that little bit more if needed.

So, it is important to keep in mind the following;-

  • The bulk of the load in photo editing is carried by the processor\CPU.
  • Maximising on your memory is a must, the more the merrier. If you mean out on the memory, than running low on it will result in bottle necking as other resources such as the hard drive will be used by the system and the editing software (i.e. Photoshop), slowing down your system considerably.
  • Faster storage is a must, even if you have the right amount of memory.  That is why all our solutions recommend SSDs as a primary option for OS and application installs.  However,  let has not forget the traditional hard drive which is a great and viable source for mass storage of pictures and other data.
  • A graphics card plays a less vital role in this type of setup.  However, with the modern iterations of Photoshop and Lightroom having a graphics card with a healthy amount of onboard memory (VRAM), is highly recommended.  In addition you will need to look at the number of monitors supported, type of connections and on high end screens features such as 10-bit colour gamut.
  • Monitors, it is important that it has good viewing angles, evenly distributed back lighting and plenty of options to adjust colour reproduction, this is key in helping that what you see on your screen translates to what you see in real life.

Video Editing

Desktop & Workstations

One of most demanding task for a computers is the post production of video and film. Whether it is adding special effects and CGI, editing timelines and cropping footage or rendering the completed video to differing formats, all these creative workflows will put a computer to the test.

Your time is money, so having a reliable, robust and powerful system is above all else and this we at VUK understand.

The Right Processor\CPU?

A fast processor is critical to for a video editing computer. However, depending on utilisation and software, will inform what processor you will need, such as;-

  • You might need high clock speed.
  • In other instances you may require a lot of cores to process work in parallel.
  • Even the codecs you use will impact processor usage and requirements.

We can\have tailored the processor selection on our custom VUK computers, to match your specific requirements in terms of software and the type of footage they need to optimised for.

What Video Card?

Depending on the software or how you wish to utilise the system, from simply displaying content to your screen, the following are things to keep in mind;-

  • It is your primary computational device for rendering special effect, colour grading to video decoding and encoding.
  • Having the right amount of outputs depending on how many monitors you wish to use.

The Amount of Memory?

As, always the more the merrier.

This also depends on the software application and size of the project.  In general, higher resolution footage will need more memory.

When using After Effects, the amount of memory dictates how many frame can be stored in memory at a given time.  there are alot of factors to keep in mind this is where we can help you tune the configuration and optimisation of your computer to any unique requirement with our VUK custom builds.

Storage?

An often overlooked part of the design and configuration, ‘Storage’, things to keep in mind;-

  • Separate editing drive when working video footage.  Keeping these files isolated from the operating system and application avoiding bottle necks.
  • Using the fastest SSD are NVMe drives.  But not discounting the traditional SATA SSDs, as they still offer more storage per cost and for large file transfers or exporting completed project the are more than fast enough.
  • External Thunderbolt or network based storage arrays can be employed when the need to scale up or massive storage space is needed.

Drive Setup?

Four drive rule;-

  1. For operating system and applications.
  2. Another drive for source source video.
  3. And finally one for finished project(s).
  4. Some application also support cache drives and having a dedicated drive for that can be highly valuable.

For archiving of old projects of backing up of work in progress can be achieved with external drives or networked storage.

The Processor\CPU

For rendering, even thought GPU rendering is important, a powerful CPU\processor is also still a very important component.

Different applications will utilise the processor in different ways. Some will be more sensitive to clock speed or max out around a certain number of cores.

We recommend that you start of at the 16 or greater core models from Intel and if that is unable to handle the complex nature of your composition then moving to the 32 core AMD Threadripper Pro, can do the job.  As these chips also support much higher memory confiurations, which is a factor certain DAW applications.  Especially if you use enough tracks that justify a higher core processor.

The Video Card

In the case of DAW system, audio editing does not require for high end cards for 3D graphics, but the key requirements for DAW workflow is to consider the following;-

  • Multiple monitor support.
  • Low noise levels, to avoid background noise.

This when designing and configuring your VUK custom computer we pay very close attention.

The Memory

This extremely important for DAWs, the rule of thumb is;-

  • 32 to 64GB is more than sufficient for smaller projects, with few tracks.
  • 128 to 256GB is a better range for massive compositions with dozens of tracks.

More tracks means more memory is required, once plugins and VSTs are factored in the more memory the better.

Also, don’t forget the requirements of specific software and how applications you are running at the same time will also impact on the how much memory you will need.

The Storage

Having the fastest storage is highly critical in DAW systems, so we recommend just using SSDs, for your operating system, applications and ample files.  For backup the ideal would be to use on external or network attacked drives.  We tend tend to advise the following configuration;-

  • 1TB for your operating system and software.
  • For your media and files a larger drive from 2 to 8TB if you a lot of data you want available at your fingertips.
  • This can be split further depending on your workflow and requirements.  Seperate drive for your project and another  for your samples.
